Helping Children Understand Their World
Child Writes is a program and an literary adventure dedicated to giving children a megaphone for their voices by using books as a platform. With a hand-holding, step-by-step process, tutors and passionate literacy advocates lead children through the entire process of creating their own children’s picture book. From conceiving the original idea, through all the writing phases to using professional illustration tools, to the book launch and beyond! It is about giving children a voice.
“I couldn’t believe it when I saw the book, my very own book – finished, printed, bound - when it came back from the printers. I didn’t really believe I had written and illustrated a real book until then.”
Annabel, age 11, author & illustrator, 'The Tea Party Terror'
“…the sheer feeling of success of writing, illustrating and publishing a children’s book of your own, words cannot describe the feeling. So for anyone out there wanting to publish a book of their own, I encourage you, although it has its up and downs, the feelings are unexplainable.”
Ashlee, age 12, author & illustrator, 'I Want a Friend'
“When I first published my book, I gave my closest family and friends a copy of my book for Christmas presents, and after that there were a number of people who wanted a copy. So I reprinted and sold copies to those people. I am currently working towards placing my book in a local bookshop with order by consignment.”
Blake, age 9, author & illustrator ‘Hamish and His Hovercraft’
“Publishing a book is a great feeling! When you see the book for the very first time you look at it and say ‘Wow! I made this!’ It feels wonderful to know that you did all the hard work and you achieved something as great as this!”
Emily, age 12, author & illustrator, 'Too Busy Lizzie' and 'Lizzie in the Bush'
“It is a really big thing to do, and sometimes you want it to finish – but when it does the feeling of success is really big too!”
Emma, age 9, author & illustrator, BFF
"Creating a children’s book has been one of the best and most challenging experiences of my life so far."
